Our History
The First Congregational Church was founded in 1691 as the first organized church in Waterbury. The original location of the meetinghouse was on the green in downtown Waterbury.’ between the YMCA and the Basilica. The present congregation is the product of the merger of First and Second Congregational Churches, and the Italian Congregational Church.
After the devasting fire at the Second Congregational Church in 1961, we were invited to worship with the First Church of Waterbury. In 1965 we joined congregations and dedicated our new Worship House at our current location on the corner of Holmes Ave, Central Ave and West Main Street (the old site of the Second Church).
Since our move to our present location, we have continued to minister to the needs of the members of our community. We are members of the NACCC (National Association of Congregational Christian Churches). We are members of the Naugatuck Valley Association, Congregational Union, (First Congregational Church, South Congregational Church and Mill Plain Union Church, all in Waterbury). We are members of the Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries (GWIM) which operates a food bank, a resource center, and soup kitchen at 770 East Main Street in Waterbury. We offer opportunities for fellowship including our Adult Choir, Youth Group and Craft Group
